Your baby’s first birthday only happens once!
PSA: Your baby’s first birthday only happens once! It is truly a magical moment that MUST be captured. MUST! Trust me when I say these are moments that you don’t want to miss out on. To be able to look back someday on these photos with your little one (who may or may not be so little anymore) and tell them the story of their first birthday. It brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it!
Baby’s First Birthday Smash Cake Photoshoot
A beautiful example of this happened in my studio recently while we were shooting little Miss. Amari’s first birthday cake smash session in my photography studio in Wisconsin. Mama (Danielle) attended the session with grandma in tote for support, getting all the big smiles, and to share in all the excitement. Amari’s Grandma said, “I remember Danielle’s first birthday, she LOVED her birthday cake! She dove right in!” as we watched Mama’s mini-me diving in for her first bite. So sweet!
This is a moment to treasure and enjoy together!
It’s such a beautiful experience that I think it is even more special when the whole family is able to participate and enjoy watching their little one’s newest experience. This is why I invite Mama, Daddy, and maybe grandma/grandpa or big brother/sister to be present for this momentous occasion. You don’t want to miss it! For this reason, I also like to recommend having family photos taken during your little one’s first birthday session. That way when you are showing him/her their photos someday they can see who was present for this special one-time event.
A Healthy Homemade Smash Cake Recipe
To make the session even sweeter (well naturally sweet actually), this Mama homemade her baby’s smash cake for her first birthday session with all of her baby’s favorite healthy foods; blueberries, strawberries, and bananas! How cute is that?!
She was even kind enough to share her recipe with me.
So in hopes to help out my DIY Mama’s out there with finding an easy, healthy, no sugar added, gluten-free, and dairy-free first birthday cake smash recipe I am sharing the recipe with all of you, too!
For more tips and tricks to help your baby’s cake smash session go smashingly 😉 see my Mama’s “Getting Ready Guide” which is an amazing resource included when booking your baby’s session with me.
Ingredients:
This baby’s 1st birthday cake is gluten-free, dairy-free, and naturally sweetened with baby’s favorite fruits for a flavorful, beautiful, safe, and simple cake.
The cake:
- 4 very ripe medium bananas with lots of brown spots
- 1 1/4 cup of gluten-free flour
- 1/2 cup of oat flour (or you can make your own with rolled oats/oatmeal)
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 cup butter, or coconut oil (for a dairy free alternative), or plain whole milk yogurt
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
Blueberry & Strawberry cream cheese frosting:
- 1 cup freeze-dried blueberries (and/or strawberries for mix of colors/flavors or a pink frosted cake!)
- 12 ounces of cream cheese (softened at room temperature)
- 3 TBSP unsalted butter (softened at room temperature)
- 1.5 tsp pure vanilla extract
TIP: This doesn’t have to include any added sugars, (unless the Mama taste-test says we need to add a little bit of honey or maple syrup to sweeten the deal!) so you can let the natural sweetness from the cake shine through. It’s a perfect first cake for a baby!
