When to Book a Santa Photoshoot for an Easy Holiday Season

If thinking about Santa photos before you’ve even pulled the fall decorations out feels a little ridiculous, I understand.
Christmas has a way of feeling very far away right up until suddenly it isn’t.
And after hosting The Santa Experience last year, I learned something that I wish I could tell every family before the holiday season starts:

The families who plan their Santa photos early aren't necessarily the people who love Christmas the most. They're usually just the ones who know how quickly life gets full.

Santa Photoshoot

Last year, I heard from several families who fully intended to book when reservations opened.

They saw the announcement. They wanted to come.

They just didn’t book right then.

And then there was a birthday party. A soccer game. A trip. Another holiday event went onto the calendar. Someone went back to book and the time they needed was gone.

Before long, The Santa Experience had filled.

In fact, last year’s event booked completely within one week.

A few families reached back out later hoping something had opened, and I hated having to tell them there simply wasn’t room.

Not because they hadn’t wanted the experience.

They had just assumed they had more time.

And honestly, as a mom of three, I understand exactly how that happens.

That’s why I talk about Santa in July.

Not because I’m trying to rush us into Christmas.

Quite the opposite.

I want you to have enough time that Christmas doesn’t feel rushed at all.

When Should I Actually Book My Santa Session?

Earlier than you probably think.

For the 2026 Santa Experience in Eureka, booking opens first to my VIP list, including Collective Membership clients, Elf Pass holders, and previous clients, on October 12.

Then, Nice List members receive access on October 15.

Once your booking window opens, I wouldn’t wait too long.

Last year’s Santa Experience filled within a week, and the most desirable appointment times naturally went first.

Booking early isn’t just about getting a spot.

It’s about getting the spot that actually works for your family.

There is a big difference between:

Which appointment works best with naps, school, and the rest of our day?

and

Well… this is the one that’s left.

I much prefer the first conversation.

If you’re hoping to attend this year, make sure you’re on the Nice List before October 15 so the booking details land directly in your inbox.

And if you’re already thinking ahead to next Christmas, you can either purchase an Elf Pass by ordering one of this year’s heirloom ornaments or add your name to the 2027 waitlist.

Because apparently planning next Christmas while this Christmas is still approaching is who we are now. 🎅🏼

What Does the “Best” Santa Time Actually Mean?

There really isn’t one perfect Santa appointment.

There is, however, probably a perfect one for your family.

If you have a little one who wakes up ready to conquer the world at 7:00 a.m., an earlier appointment may be wonderful.

My family?

Absolutely not.

We are decidedly not morning people.

Now that I have three children, getting everyone fed, dressed, reasonably clean, and out of the house looking anything like the people I intended to bring takes… a minute.

For us, I would probably choose something around 11:00 or 11:30.

It’s late enough that I don’t feel like I’m running a small military operation before breakfast, but still early enough to work around afternoon naps for my toddler and baby. My oldest is much more flexible at this point.

That’s why I encourage parents to think about more than which appointment looks convenient on the calendar.

Think about:

your child’s normal wake-up time,
when they eat,
whether they’re still napping,
how long your family realistically needs to get out the door,
and when your children are usually happiest.

The goal isn’t to arrive at the earliest possible appointment.

It’s to arrive with children who are actually ready to enjoy Santa.

What if I have more than one child?

Santa Photoshoot

Siblings from the same immediate family are photographed during the same Santa Experience appointment.

Each appointment can comfortably accommodate up to three children from the same immediate family.

If you have more than three children, please reach out before booking. I’ll help you choose the best option so everyone has enough time with Santa and the experience doesn’t feel rushed.

And speaking mother-to-mother, if you’re bringing three little people, don’t underestimate the value of giving yourself a slightly later morning appointment.

Getting one child Christmas-ready is festive.

Getting three ready is project management.

When Should I Choose Outfits for Santa Photos?

This might actually be the part I see families underestimate most.

You book the photographs and think:

Great. That’s handled.

And then, approximately four days before your session:

What is everyone wearing?!

For families in Humboldt County, this can become especially tricky because shipping isn’t always exactly… speedy.

Orders can easily take two to three weeks to arrive here.

Then something doesn’t fit.

One child suddenly hates the sweater.

You realize the shoes don’t work.

You need a different size.

And now you’re waiting another two weeks for the replacement while watching the tracking information like it’s a medical monitor.

This is one of the biggest differences I see between families who plan ahead and families who wait.

When you book early, you have room to try things on.

You can order two sizes.

You can make a return.

You can realize the beautiful cream dress looks decidedly less beautiful when your daughter refuses to bend her arms in it.

There is time to change course.

And that makes the entire experience feel lighter.

My advice?

Once your Santa appointment is booked, start thinking about clothing fairly soon afterward.

You don’t have to buy everything immediately. Just don’t leave yourself dependent on a package arriving in Humboldt County three days before your session.

We’ve all played that game.

I don’t recommend it.

Santa Photoshoot

Does It Really Matter If I Wait?

This is where I think last year gave me the clearest answer.

A number of families saw booking open and thought, I’ll come back to this.

And then they did what all of us do.

They kept living.

Someone invited them somewhere.

A sports schedule came out.

A family obligation landed on the same weekend.

They forgot to come back to the email.

By the time Santa came back onto their radar, either the appointment they wanted was gone or their calendar no longer worked at all.

Some of those families were genuinely disappointed that they had missed it.

That’s why I don’t want you to think of early booking as some kind of photography-industry pressure tactic.

It’s really just about protecting a little space on your family’s calendar before everyone else gets to it.

Booking the experience doesn’t make Christmas arrive any sooner.

It simply means that when November arrives, Santa photos are already handled.

And I think there’s something rather lovely about that.

How Do Santa Photos Fit into the Christmas Card Timeline?

Santa Photoshoot

This is one of those things that sounds simple until you work backward from Christmas.

First you need the photographs.

Then the gallery has to be edited and delivered.

Then you have to choose your favorites.

Then Christmas cards need to be designed.

Ordered.

Shipped to you.

Addressed.

Stamped.

And somehow mailed before everyone has already left town for Christmas.

It’s a surprisingly long journey for one little piece of cardstock.

The earlier your Santa Experience is booked and planned, the easier everything after it becomes.

Instead of realizing in late November that you still need Christmas card photos, you already know they’re handled.

That little bit of breathing room matters.

Especially if you’re mailing cards to family across the country, overseas, or to military addresses where delivery times can be longer.

The Holiday To-Dos That Get Easier Once Your Gallery Arrives

Once your photographs are finished, a surprising number of other holiday tasks become easier too.

You can order Christmas cards without the late-November scramble.

You can choose framed prints or gifts for grandparents.

You can order an heirloom ornament.

You can add photographs to your holiday decor.

You can cross one more thing off the list before December really gets moving.

And that is honestly one of my favorite parts of planning early.

By the time December arrives, instead of thinking:

We still need to do Santa photos.

you get to think:

The photos are done.

A small sentence.

A very good feeling.

When Should I Actually Pick Outfits for a Santa Photoshoot?

Probably earlier than you think.

This is one of the biggest things I see become stressful for families who wait.

You book the session and think:

Perfect. That’s handled.

And then, a week before your appointment:

What is everyone wearing?!

For families here in Humboldt County, shipping can easily take two to three weeks.

Then something doesn’t fit.

One child suddenly hates the sweater.

The shoes don’t work.

You need another size.

And now you’re waiting for a replacement while checking the tracking page like it’s a vital sign monitor.

This is why I love when families give themselves enough runway.

You have time to order a couple of options.

You have time to return something.

You have time to change your mind.

You have time to realize the beautiful cream dress is less beautiful when your daughter refuses to bend her arms in it.

My advice is simple:

Once your Santa appointment is booked, start thinking about clothing fairly soon afterward.

You don’t have to buy everything immediately.

Just don’t leave yourself dependent on a package arriving in Humboldt County three days before your session.

We’ve all played that game.

I don’t recommend it.

Does It Really Feel Too Early to Think About Santa Photos?

Yes.

And that’s actually the point.

The families who feel the calmest by the time November and December arrive are often the ones who handled a few things before they felt urgent.

Booking your Santa Experience early doesn’t mean putting up the Christmas tree in July.

It doesn’t mean skipping fall.

And it definitely doesn’t mean you have to start listening to Christmas music before you’re emotionally prepared.

It simply means the date is reserved.

The time works for your family.

You know what’s coming.

And when the season gets busy, one important thing is already handled.

That’s the kind of early I like.

What Happens If I Wait After Booking Opens?

This is where last year taught me the most.

Several families saw booking open and thought:

I’ll come back to this.

And then they did what all of us do.

They kept living.

Someone invited them somewhere.

A school event popped up.

A sports schedule changed.

They forgot about the email.

By the time they remembered, either the appointment they wanted was gone or another commitment had claimed the day.

Some of those families were genuinely disappointed that they had missed it.

That’s why I don’t look at early booking as some sort of pressure tactic.

It’s really about protecting a little space on your family’s calendar before everyone else gets to it.

Last year’s Santa Experience filled within one week.

So if this is something you know you want to do, I wouldn’t treat the booking email like something you’ll circle back to someday.

Someday has a sneaky habit of becoming December.

What a Santa Photo Session Looks Like When You Work with Me

santa photoshoot

The Santa Experience is not meant to feel like a conveyor belt of children being placed beside Santa for thirty seconds while someone desperately tries to get everyone to look at the camera.

I want children to have a little room to actually meet him.

To talk.

To think very seriously about what they want for Christmas.

To inspect the beard.

To warm up if they’re unsure.

To whisper something you can’t quite hear.

Sometimes the photograph parents love most isn’t the perfectly posed one.

It’s the tiny conversation happening between the two of them.

The suspicious side-eye.

The belly laugh.

The child who was absolutely certain they were not going anywhere near Santa and then, five minutes later, is telling him their entire life story.

Those are the moments I love.

Each family has its own reserved appointment, and siblings from the same immediate family are photographed within that same session time.

Each Santa Experience can comfortably accommodate up to three children from the same immediate family.

If you have more than three children, please reach out before booking so I can help you choose the best option and make sure everyone has enough time with Santa without the experience feeling rushed.

Book Your Santa Photoshoot Before Sessions Sell Out

Booking Santa photos early isn’t really about being an overachiever.

It’s about making the season easier on yourself.

Choose the appointment that works around naps.

Put the date on the family calendar before six other things try to claim it.

Order the outfits while there’s still enough time to send something back.

Then forget about it for a while.

Christmas will arrive on its own.

It always does.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book a Santa photoshoot?

Book as soon as your access window opens. For the 2026 Santa Experience, VIP booking begins October 12 and Nice List booking begins October 15. Last year’s event filled within one week, so waiting can mean losing the time that works best for your family.

How early is too early to book a Santa session?

There really isn’t a too early. Booking early simply gives you more choice, more time to plan outfits, and less pressure once the holiday calendar begins filling up.

Can I still book a Santa photoshoot in November?

Possibly, but availability may be very limited or gone entirely. Last year’s Santa Experience filled within one week. If sessions are full, join the 2027 waitlist or purchase an heirloom ornament to receive an Elf Pass for next year’s priority booking.

Why don't photographers do Santa sessions in mid to late December?

Because photographs still need time to be edited, delivered, printed, gifted, or used for Christmas cards. Holding Santa sessions earlier gives families enough room to actually enjoy the finished photographs before Christmas arrives.

When will I get my Santa photoshoot gallery back?

Standard Santa galleries are delivered within 2–3 weeks of the event.

If you need your photographs sooner for Christmas cards, gifts, or holiday artwork, Priority Gallery Delivery is available for an additional fee and moves your gallery to the front of my holiday editing queue for delivery within 5 business days.

Can I order Christmas cards, prints, and gifts through you?

Yes. Santa families can order finished products such as prints, holiday cards, and heirloom ornaments, making it easier to turn favorite Santa photographs into gifts and seasonal keepsakes.

What if my child is sick on our Santa session day?

If your child is sick, please let me know as soon as possible. I completely understand that little ones don’t always cooperate with the calendar, especially during cold and flu season.

The more notice I have, the better chance I have of offering your appointment to another family on the waitlist and helping you figure out the best next step.

Because The Santa Experience is a limited one-day event, rescheduling options may be very limited, and depending on the timing of the cancellation, a cancellation fee may apply.
